About

Daan van Houten (NL, 1993) is a self-taught artist. He started pursuing his art practice in 2023 after a short career in advertising. He studied Communication Science with a Master’s degree in Persuasive Communication.

Daan’s work stems from a life-long obsession with a collective consciousness. He draws on cultural artifacts such as mythology, morals, media logic, stereotypes or gossip. Daan reflects on these subjects through painting, printmaking and drawing. He has developed an improvisational process to overcome his initial associations, allowing the material and composition to inform the imagery, so that he may arrive at more honest and confronting ideas. His work asks how private our thinking really is, if it is so publicly shaped.
