About

Through his work, Daan van Houten (NL, 1993) examines how public consciousness shapes his private thinking. He draws from cultural phenomena—mythology, stereotypes, movie tropes, folk stories, art history—which he appropriates and processes through painting, printmaking and drawing. He approaches his subjects through an associative process in which material response and compositional interaction transform the image, until his own thoughts transform with it.

Daan is self-taught and began his practice in 2023 after a short career in advertising and a master’s in communication science.
